The New York state town of Batavia, situated between Buffalo and Rochester in Genesee County on the former Genesee County Fair Ground, is the home of Batavia Downs racecourse which, back in 1939, was the brainchild of William Goldberg, Harold Wishman, Arthur Martin, Frederick Strohm and William Zimmer. It held its inaugural meeting on Friday 20th September 1940, welcoming a crowd in excess of 2500 people, and can rightly lay claim to being the oldest harness racetrack in the USA to be run under floodlights. The 4 furlong oval track for Standardbred horses has a home straight of 152 metres, and continues to be run successfully in 2019.
